COACHING REFLECTION
Coaching. Reflection. Awareness.
The concept of transference in therapy, counselling, or coaching refers to a subconscious projection of feelings by the client toward the coach. This means that a quality or characteristic of the coach unwittingly reminds the client of previous experiences. This concept isn’t receiving the attention it should get in coaching.
Transference can also occur when the coachee triggers unconscious attitudes, behaviors and perceptions within the coach, that may affect the coaching conversation. We are all humans, we don’t “come clean”.
As a coach I have the habit of reflecting after each session and allowing thoughts and feelings to “sink in”. I found that going for a run/swim allows me to process information in a different way and uncover additional correlation between stories, situations and feelings, that support my ability to add value to my coachee, by highlighting themes and connecting new dots. I also try to notice how my speech cadence, flow of thoughts or focus were influenced by my coachees’ demeanor. It enables me to realize what I should be paying attention to when I interact as coach, so my presence will be unconditional as it possibly can be.
What is your best way to self-reflect? Have you noticed or experienced Coaching Transference? How do you best work with it?
